About Ayurveda

Origin/History

Ayurveda is believed to be the oldest surviving complete medicine system in the world – originating over 5000 years ago in the Indus Valley Civilisation in Pakistan ,who were then pushed down to Kerala, now known as the Home of Ayurveda.

Through trade routes in ancient civilisations dating back to 800bc, knowledge of Indian plants recorded in their Materia Medicas were passed on to the ancient Greeks and Romans, whose philosophies and practises were eventually to form the basis of European Medicine. This early text is still considered the main authority of Ayurveda and is constantly referred to in both the teachings and practise of Ayurveda today.

As a more global view of medicine, philosophy and spirituality develops, Ayurveda’s popularity in the West is soaring today.

Philosophy and Principles
At the heart of Ayurveda lies the understanding that Everything is One – meaning that everything exists in relation, not in isolation. Body affects Mind and vice versa; feelings and thoughts have physical effects, just as disorders of the body affect our psychological state.

Everything in the universe is composed of energy and this exists in five different states of density :

The 5 Elements
Ether/Space
Air – motion
Fire – radiant energy
Water – cohesive factor
Earth – mass

These elements can be perceived as metaphors that help us to understand the Universe, they are fine qualities of energy that we can experience daily in our physical, mental and emotional lives. As long as our relationship with the universe is healthy and wholesome, we can be in Optimum Health.

About Sally

I first qualified in Anatomy, Physiology and Massage ITEC in 1999 then my fascination and dedication took me straight on to Reflexology ITEC, Aromatherapy, Massage and Indian Head Massage Diplomas, where I practised from home and various clinics and practises throughout Somerset.

I love travel and world culture and was lucky to have experienced India a few times as my fascination of their unique culture kept pulling me back. I studied at Aithein Ayurvedic School in South India where I qualified in Marma Point Massage and took an Introductory course in Ayureda.

I have now qualified as an Ayurvedic Health Consultant and Therapist Level 2 here in England with Mind-Body Medical College of Ayurveda on the south coast.
I feel privileged to have experienced both studying Ayurveda in its native origin in the East and bringing these philosophies and principles into our Western society and formulating a union of the two – East meets West, therefore implementing these practises, herbs and nutrition into our everyday lifestyle.

Somerset is a glorious place to live and I look forward to meeting and treating you here in our home of Avalon.
